What Makes A Good Diamond Purchase?

When you go to buy a car or a computer, odds are you will try to do as much research as you can to ascertain whether you are making a good purchase. It may be surprising to know, however, that the same is not true when it comes to making one of the most important, and expensive, purchases that marks a pivotal moment in people's lives: the Diamond engagement ring purchase. The reasons for that can vary, from the excitement of the moment to being intimidated by the jewelry buying experience. Yet, buying a quality Diamond and knowing you got a good purchase can be a great way to start your married life out right. It can help you avoid costly mistakes from picking up a synthetic fancy Diamond and mistaking it for the real thing, to spending way too much for something you could have gotten at a better price elsewhere.

 Bonding Appraisal Is a Guarantee

When you buy a car it comes with a guarantee for some major parts, but is there something similar in the jewelry business? Diamonds can come with a fully-bonded appraisal, most desirably from the GIA labs. This is a document that is not the same as a lab grading report, but actually much more comprehensive. It will give details on the types of measurements taken, from industry grade machines like the Sarin or Megascope machines, as well as color grading. The four Cs of color, clarity, carat, and cut will be determined. It will give the buyer the peace of mind on the specific details of the Diamond that will also have a bonding document which is a guarantee of its primary and secondary marketplace value.  However, only 2% of Diamonds actually come with a bonding appraisal document.

 The Lab Grading Report

The next option to ascertain the quality and value of a Diamond is the lab grading report. Just be sure you get a lab grading report from a well known and trusted lab like GIA, AGS, or any other high quality lab. What you want to avoid is a lab report issued from an independent laboratory associated too strongly with the jeweler selling you the Diamond. It should be a trusted laboratory that is known for objective grading of Diamonds. Otherwise, you might have a lot o disparity of opinion going from one independent laboratory to the next one. This is a very standard way in the business to determine the authenticity and quality of your stone, even if the lab grading report is not as comprehensive a procedure as the bonding appraisal. Getting professional opinions on the Diamonds you are considering buying is one way to make sure you are getting a good purchase by quantifying the variables that can affect a Diamond's value.

 Don't Forget the Aesthetics

A Diamond purchase isn't all about technical perfection, however. Much of the actual value of the purchase can come from the enjoyment one gets from owning and wearing the Diamond. Aesthetics play a very important role in picking out the Diamond that you want. There are so many different shapes, colors, and jewelry possibilities that even if the Diamond is not flawless, it can still provide maximum enjoyment for many years. Keep that in mind when you are out there buying Diamonds. Beauty, in this case, is definitely in the eye of the beholder, and that person is going to be the one that wears the Diamond, not the one that grades or appraises it.
